In the Italian restaurant category, the competition is very fierce in South Africa, but the memorable ones can be counted on just one hand.
A Tavola in Claremont did not open with much hoopla and a number of years later has quietly established itself as a “local” with a loyal following. In contrast to many others, it has not chosen the Grand Prix or football-themed trattoria look and the result is an Italian in the form of a modern café. “The food all round was excellent. Portions are generous, particularly the antipasti, and service was also very good. The one small gripe was the sliced fillet dish had to be returned as it was done more rare than expected - we ordered medium-well done, probably our own mistake. That said, the meals were all outstanding. The menu caters more than adequately for vegetarians, meat- and fish-lovers alike. A good place to re-visit.”

“I've been at A Tavola three times. The food is authentically Italian. My favorites are the caprese salad and the Linguine Gamberoni (prawn pasta). The restaurant doesn't offer a cocktail menu, which I find disappointing, but for the wine drinkers, the wine selection is good.”

“We eat regularly at A Tavola and I can honestly say that the food is always outstanding and the service kind. The menu is freshened with seasonal updates to keep regulars like ourselves interested. Their Zuppa Frutti di Mare is the best ever. Well done to the chef and his capable team.”

“So often a restaurant has good and bad days but, after several meals at A'Tavola, my experience has been that the food is consistently good here. The noise absorbing tiles that have been built in to the ceiling are amazing - one is able to dine without being disturbed by others' whose voices may be unusually loud. “A Tavola has become an institution in Cape Town, an exemplary restaurant serving Italian fare. Do arrive with a reservation, and be aware that locals frequent this Italian gem – the restaurant is often packed at night, weekdays and weekends. The atmosphere is sophisticated, but unobtrusive with a sense of joviality. Diners enjoy privacy but are part of a larger whole, a community dining and celebrating life. The décor hints at drama with its draped curtains. The menu is strictly Italian and offers an array of antipasti, salads, primi courses and secondi courses. I visited with my foodie best friend whose high standards could be any cook’s challenge. Our aperitifs included a full blood Italian spritz – which has been executed and served perfectly. We side stepped all temptations and opted straight for secondi: Veal Limone and Saltimbocca alla Romana. Both dishes were flavoursome, perfectly executed (according to my well travelled, foodie friend’s standards). We shared both dishes and finished every morsel. We shared a plate of summary peaches filled with flavour and served with gelato. The service was superb. Ideal for all those celebrating and savouring life.”
“We enjoyed a family meal at A Tavola last night and were so impressed with the service efficiency and quality of food. We chose from the Menu of the Day and the food was really excellent. One of our party was delayed at the airport and they handled the serving of the food very well. The wine was good and the waiter very knowledgeable.”
“A firm favourite that we visit at least every couple of months...normally I only ever order the same mushroom with truffle oil as it's amazing, but last night I tried their ricotta and para ham parcels....OMG it was out of this world. Subtle herbs and generous portion size. Also ordered was the soup starter - frutti di mare....yum! Always have the zucchini frutti on the side...The best. Great service and attention as usual. David the owner runs the best Italian kitchen in town...and you can see they are happy.”
“This restaurant was recommended by the hotel driver,and what recommendation on arrival all staff were so polite,the menu was fantastic I had the calamari for starter and the veal saltumboca for main and both were absolutely fantastic and this rates as my top meal in Cape town,a must place to visit and we shall definitely be going back very soon.”

“A Tavola has been my family's go-to spot for all special occasions or evenings of sheer indulgence and food-joy! It NEVER disappoints and the view from the dining area into the open-plan kitchen, bursting with enthusiastic chefs, fresh pasta neatly stashed in clear boxes, frying pans flaming up and the smells of only the best and most carefully prepared ingredients on their way to your ever-anticipating palate, is simply divine! I always leave wanting to come back as soon as possible and have yet to taste a single morsel that is not perfectly prepared and beautifully (yet unpretentiously) presented! Undoubtedly THE BEST Melanzane Parmigiana in Cape Town and I have tried and failed repeatedly, to leave without first savouring every mouthful of their Torte de la Nonna - it is simply FABULOUS! I will remain an enthusiastic and loyal regular! Always simply a pleasure to be there! P.S. The Decor is also totally charming and one feels almost as if one has been transported to a real little gem in the heart of Rome! No frills, no fuss, just excellence time and time again!”
“I was so impressed by the food I visited A Tavola twice in a week. On my first visit we ate of the "specials" menu. There was an excellent choice and reasonably priced. The quality of the food was excellent and the staff very attentive. I took my cousin on my second visit and we both chose pasta dishes. The pasta was the best I have ever tasted - mouth-wateringly good. I would suggest booking in advance as it is very busy.”
